EJ20
« on: 12:41PM 12/09/2003 »
Just want to share some intresting fact that I have learned about my wrx.

First off the Ej20 is an amazing motor. I love owning a turbo car, add AWD to that...... The only weak link in the car is the tranny. As long as you dont drop the clutch the tranny will last and all will be good. As far as engine upgrades go I could be at the 300hp mark in no time. It is actually very simple to upgrade and tune the wrx. Most of you know about Cobb Tuning next door to Modern. They are amazing to say the least. They have a complete tuning package that includes 10 fuel maps that you can automatically change to as you upgrade your car. It is called access port and it is only 555.00. You plug it into you OBDII port and select the map you want, wait for it to load, and then un-plug it. Simple as that
Stage 1 map. This is a stock everything map. It basically smooths out your fuel map and removes a 1st gear boost limitation.

Stage 2 is getting close to 300 crank HP  it adds 54 HP at the wheels with the addition of a catless up-pipe, and turbo back exhuast.

VF30,34 maps. These are upgraded turbo maps. The VF30 and 34 turbos are capable of creating more boost than the stock turbo. So after the stage 2 mods have been done you can order a set of STI injectors a VF34 turbo (VF34 is the one I am going to get) and an upgraded fuel pump. This will get me to 300+ hp

It also has a valet map, an economy map (for running <91 octane, and is capable of storing custom maps as well.

Very simple to upgrade. This is as far as I will take this car. After I am done with the WRX, When I get enough cash the integra will finally get some love by way of B18C5.

Although it's tempting to let a potential competitor make a bad decision, I'd stay away from from the VF turbos.

Think Forced Performance 20g.  Of course if you choose to disregard this, I won't mind all that much.  :)

Why would you want me to stay away from the IHI VF's?

If I were you , I would personally stop into Cobb Tuning and give them a chit chat. The staff there is very keen to all the parts that are on the market, very friendly, and are probably one of the top Subaru tuning shops in the country.

I have read many upon many article and suggestions written by the cobb staff. I am a regular on their forums. I am going to stick with my plans to upgrade with the VF34 turbo. It is a good choice as far as my plans go. I dont want anything huge but I do want to breach the 300hp mark by next fall for sure. A combination of cobb tunning, upgraded turbo, injectors, fuel pump, and exhuast pieces will get me close if not to my goal. The best part is it will look as stock as the day I bought it, besides the muffler.

They are getting cheaper. I didn't think I could afford one, then I remembered that I had 2500 saved to uprgrade the integra. I think getting the WRX was a much better choice.

Look for a guy at RMR next season with a blue WRX w/FMIC.  His name is Mitch, he's had them both.  I think he also auto-x's so you might find him here.  I think he had a couple VF turbos before he moved to the MHI turbo.

Nathan @ TurboXS has been working with FP on testing the wheel configurations.  Search for info on the net from him.

I have inquired with a few people that are familiar with the set up I am going with. The goals I have set for my car will be satisfied with a VF34 turbo being the center of the mods. It will give me quick spool and higher boost capabilities than the stock turbo. My main concern will be replacing the stock midpipe. I am going with a Cobb cat back and down pipe when they release it. I am going to gut the stock up-pipe and get the Cobb access port system. I just need to get a good mid-pipe with a decent high flow cat.
