Engine Bearings #Speed Tech/Phase One#
« on: 11:59PM 12/02/2003 »
I saw my attorney today and he wanted me to find out if it's impossible to put the wrong bearings in a motor.  And also about running out of oil http://www.eliterides.com/forums/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=879;start=9;boardseen

I need to get PROFESSIONAL statements for court but all your opinions/experiences will help.

It is very possible to put the wrong bearings in while building a motor. They should be measured for proper clearance before they are installed. If you dont have the correct bearings your motor will tear itself apart.

Yeah, that's what happened to my car.  But in his statement he said it's "impossible" to install the wrong bearings.  He put 3000GT bearings in my motor.   I guess since both our cars motors are 6g72 motors he figured it would work.

Here is an email from Larry Widmer. He works for endyn

Spun bearings if they are too tight, no oil pressure if they're too loose.
The reason Honda engines work so well from the factory is because Honda
spends so much time making sure bearing clearances are right on the money.
We spend 4-6 hours checking bearing clearances on engines we assemble...

Subject: main bearings

What would be some problems with a motor built with improperly sized
bearings? I appreciate your time answering this question.

Thanks

Corey

Even if they are the same motor the bearings must be sized in order to work correctly. Any engine builder should know this. Every engine is different even if they are the same motor type.

This guy must be a complete idiot...you need to have the correct size no matter what the car is.  Sounds like he is already admitting fault if he put in the 3000 gt bearings.

When it first broke he told me that the person he ordered them from sent the 3000GT bearings and that was the problem.  Now that I'm taking him to court he's saying he didn't put the wrong bearings in.

What ever he is saying is a bunch of crap. It all boils down to the fact that he didnt size the bearings correctly and he should pay for your new motor.

There are about 10 different main bearing part numbers for 3g eclipses.  Depends on your production date and specific clearances.  Roughly 5 available sizes per vehicle production range.  Some of the bearings interchange between production ranges, some don't.

Rod bearings are all the same on 3g eclipses.

Main bearings come in a variety of sizes for the 3000gt

Rod bearings for 3000gt cars come in a variety of sizes.

As far as I can tell none of the Mitsubishi factory part numbers interchange between the 3000gt and 3g eclipse.

Rod bearings are more versatile, you can resize the big end of the rod to match the bearing and crank journals.

Main bearings would require a line hone.  It's not cost effective to do over just matching the right bearings, and the block would have to be out of the car.  No in-car rebuild.

If during the rebuild you use ARP main studs or rod bolts you would have to line hone/resize the rods because the mains and rods get pulled out of round by the differing clamping force.

Also, I believe that 1995 and newer Mitsu stuff uses non-reusable main bolts, they generally stretch when you torque them to spec.  Most say to not reuse them, but you can inspect them and reuse them if they are not severly stretched.  Reusing a bolt that was stretched out of spec could lead to abnormal wear issues.  2g eclipses are this way, I'm assuming all newer mitsu stuff is the same.
