150mph Jetta GT?
« on: 08:21AM 03/26/2008 »
Question I have a friend thats a lil over zealous about his cars to a fault which in and of itself is not always a bad thing but his facts can get a little distorted.
He told me his 98 Jetta GT with a higher compression head, neusped intake, exhaust and double stack? chip can hit 150mph, naturally I laugh cuz he also says his car now puts out about 175 hp and 240 TQ and its the 2.0 sohc, Well My Shelby Lancer running on half the stock boost(5 pounds) walked away from him from a 30mph roll badly So I seriously doubt his claims but need something to be able to show him how he is wrong...
My 3.0 v6 Chrysler Lebaron convertible also destroyed his jetta up to 115mph or so by a few car lengths to at about 120 he finally caught me but I had to explain it took him a few minutes to catch me so there is no way his car can hit 150mph  if it takes him that long to catch up to me..\

It can depend on a number of factors. First of all, that year Jetta doesn't have that great of drag coefficient, so he'd be fighting the wind. Downhill, strong wind at his back, I still don't think it could happen. It's not always about just the power, he'd have to do some suspension mods, and possibly re-gearing. It's probably possible, but not likely. And since when did 2.0L SOHC VW motors make that much power? The current base 2.5L 5-cyl VW motor makes 150ish HP.

Umm...yeah, just checked the specs on a 98 Jetta. They offered 3 motors, only one of which is a 2.0L SOHC, and it makes 115HP and 122lb ft. So he might make that much power he's claiming with all of his mods.

my '98 2.0L gti N/A would hit 132 no problems (then the governer would kick in) so 150 doesn't sound too crazy. The jettas are definitely not the most aerodynamic design but they have a relatively small body mass.

I was with a friend who had a similar jetta when he got it up past 150. But that was at about 300WHP/15 psi. And even then it took some time to get up there.

I really couldn't tell you though. I'm not familiar with the platform.

Maybe if the wind was blowing real hard in the same direction. ::)

When it comes to cars, you have three options: Fast, Cheap, and Reliable. And you can only pick two.

Anthing is possible I think his biggest problem is the governer. I think i could hit 150 in my Audi 1.8T with a 6sp but I'm not ready to give it a shot.

It could happen if he had a long down hill or flat road...and if the gearing allowed him to get to 150 mph.  I had my integra up to ~135 mph before I did anything ot it -- topped out because of the gearing.

Gearing and road would be huge factors.  Whatever road that it "happened" at would have to be one long a s s road/hill.  In a turbo 2000 Civic EX it couldn't go much past 125mph because of gearing.  And that was on a straight downhill road that was about 2 miles long.

well his is a jetta gt 2.0 sohc neuspeed intake/ exhuast and a double stacked chip whatever that is?
ANd his head is about a point higher on the compression than stock
But I beat him in my heavy 3.0 chrysler lebaron convertible just open exhaust I killed him to about 120 when he caught up a few minutes later cause I ran out of gearing hahaha  but whats funny is he said he could hit 150 after I told him car and driver had tested my 89 CSX VNT to 156 mph dead stock in 89 and I was reading it and he said well my jetta can hit 150 2 and I judt didnt think it possible his car that was stock with 115 hp and 122tq could even compete with a 175 hp and 215tq turbo intercooled car I mena logically it dont sound right
I mean hell with his mods he still gets raped by stock T2 turbo dodges with 175 hp and 210 TQ, so... maybe he could if he was downhill in neutral for 5 miles?

now that i think about it, my roommates jetta 2.0 is has short gearing to compensate for its lack of power...

probably wont be able to hit 150 at all.

SO logically with a higher than stock comp head, 94 trans neuspeed intake and chip and exhaust what do you all think he would max out at? and what would his power level be?
