Best boosted options?
« on: 06:45PM 07/28/2003 »
So here is my new dilema. I am getting my block sleeved, with 10.5:1 pistons connected to some econo billet rods. Fully balanced and blueprinted shrot block.
Option 1: B20/VTEC and only be able to boost 6-9 lbs
Option 2: P and P LS head and be able to boost 15+
Option 3: Say F it and try to boost the B20/VTEC and hope the head doesn't shoot through my hood

I have that the VTEC swaps are sweet, but you may run into trouble down the road...reliability issues.  I would think that you would be able to boost more than 15 lbs with sleeving the block?

only 6-9lbs with a sleeved B20 VTEC? dude, you'll be able to boost so much more. 10.5:1 isn't very high compression for FI these day's, just get it tuned really good and use ARP head studs and you'll be fine.

the problem with B20/LS VTEC is if the people do it right. there are people that have had it done and they have nothing but problems, and others have no problems at all. just depends on who builds it and what kind of job they do.

No, seriously I'm running a 11.0 compression on my motor and I could boost alot more if my blocked was sleeve and was able to hang up pistons and rods like you are. With the proper parts, turbo kit and the correct procedures you'll be boosting around 13-15 lbs. easily and generate alot more power then you think. Even if it blows you have a back up right?

Go for it, you can do it man. No, I would go for opition 3...just make sure you're properly tuned and you should be able to set the boost higher than 9 lbs.
Don't give up what you want most for what you want now.  It's a matter of priorities.

Yeah, tuning is the key when boosting, along with proper parts.

I understand that the sleeved block will be able to handle the boost, My concern is with the missmatched head/block combo. When boost is intorduced I dont want to have my head blow off.

umm, thats what the ARP head stud's are for my friend.

besides, boosting a B20 VTEC is no different than boosing a B16A or B18C1. the head was made to fit on that block so it's not mismatched, it's just not what came from the factory. cortney has 500+ hp with a B16A head on a B18C1 block, no different than running a VTEC head on a B20 block.

Corey dont be scurred......

I tell you what. You are running 10:5:1 right? And your worried about blowing your head off at 9-10 lbs. of boost.

I'm gonna run 10:1 next year and boost about 26-28 lbs. .....Feel better now. Like I said before. All you need is the right part and procedures and also combinations you'll be fine.

Well the B16 head on the B18C block mates right up no mods. Kanzen you are also running a mated head block combo. The B16 head has to be modified to fit on the B20 block that is why it is called a Frankenstein motor. The B18A/B and B20 blocks are different than their VTEC brothers.  I have decided that I will run the B20/VTEC for a while then I will boost the shiz out of it after it has proven its worth.  Plus this has to be my daily driver. So I will need her every day

yes i know you have to modify it to put a VTEC head on, my point was no matter what head/block combo you have you will still have the same chance of popping it off with too much boost, and the chances of that happening are very very very low. like i said before, get ARP head studs and a good head gasket and there will be absolutely nothing to worry about, but you don't need to listen to me. ::)

I trust you guys (especially you two Btown and Kanzen) and I am going ahead with the plan Ricky.  The only problem now is getting the cash for the turbo kit and a stand alone.

P.S. Ricky, I have been itching for power since I was 14 years old when I "borrowed" a guys 89 Mustang with a 351 windsor motor.
So btown take your

and ricky take your

and use these for some one else.   ;)
