  • tired of getting picked on? get a real car!
ok anybody out there who can help me with some electronics (d a m n wiring... lol)

i want to get a range of motion sensor, and build a bracketry system to put it on my shock absorber... then i would like to be able to hook it up to my laptop and view the voltage vs time is good enough, that would let me dial in perfect shock rates...

this could also be used for you guys tuning cars you could use the exact same logger and program and hook it up to say... an o2 sensor, which would give you a lot of useful tuning info as to lean / rich spots in the fuel curve... or a digital exhaust gas temp gauge... almost any digital sensor could be hooked up and logged...

anybody?

Super dell is a freaking idiot imo. Yeah he likes cars but he doesn't know s h i t about cars and not all that much about computers. Belive it or not.

OK here we go You want to hook up a motion sensor for what? Measure the travel or just when it moves? IMO its probably a bigger task then you think.  First you need to make sure the hardware can do what you need it to. Second, your gona need probably get your own software for it, (as in get a custom program wrote)...

In theory I think I see what your getting at but if you think you'll be able to use this to just plug into data logging software thats allready available your wrong. Cause each set of software was wrote to understand the ecu. Thats where its getting the information from not the actual sensors themselfs.

I am glad to help if you need some further explanation leme know. And hopefully I can point you in the right direction.

Pete, this is going to cost you a lot more than you think. You are going to need 4 motion sensors, wiring for all of it, labtop, a program built just for you (NOBODY has that kind of program on the market. Not enough people are that serious about racing/whatever to market something like that). Then your going to have to find someone to take the time to fine tune that custom program to your car's settings and what you want it to detect.. If you got the money and someone is dumb enough to say yea, then you are set! lol Hope it helps, and if you are serious about it, then i recommend you contact a computer technician at a large plant such as "Autoliv".. I know for a fact they mess with sensors and their programs ALL the time!

I can tell you right now that you'll probably NEVER find someone to do the programming if they don't already do it for a plant or some kind of business. That s h i t could take months and then you'll always run into problems because that's technology. If you are really THAT serious about racing, like I said check out someone at like Autoliv because that is all they do is computer crap

yeah uh i was just hoping to find some DIY guys... there are such people... megasquirt is an entire EFI system made by DIY car gusy / ex nasa engineers.

all i need is a program to log the voltage vs time on a single channel at a time. they exist they are about 800 bucks, for 32 channel datalogging, motec makes them, Pi, Stacks, all in car dattalogers that are commericially available. i was hoping to get a suspension range senser (basically a potentiometer on a linkage) off the back of a yukon / yukon denali and hook it to a simple voltage logger program and use this to graphically (excell) see the kind of harmonic vibrations i'm getting.

i searched everywhere tho and i can't find the software i need just DSM datalogger programs apparently datalogger is big with 90-94 dsm guys, they have a harness that hooks to ecu... oh i found one for obd-1 chevy  too.

don't worry about the hardware its the software i can't figure out, wiring, sensors, and laptop are s h i t i have laying around :P

gotta love my garage

by the way LOTS of people are serious enough to market this, thats why there are about 20 different systems on the market... my formula car has one, even my go kart has on board datalogging that hooks to my laptop... my dads porsche race cars use Stacks dash dataloggers... its quite common actually, an F1 car logs several hundred channels of data and broadcasts it real time to the crew in the pits for on the fly monitering... motorsport is a lot more high tech then you might beleive.

i think what theyre trying to say is even though its possible to program it, no one is going to want to do it because of the ammount of time and effort that goes into it.

I don't think he's looking for an operating system, just something to put some info into a graph, geez
To really understand something you must blow it up, and  fully examine the tiny particles while they are still on fire.

not even i just need something to capture data and output it into a simple text file a simple list of voltages...

if somebody was an avid computer programmer it wouldn't take em more then a couple hours to write it.

Keyword "avid". If i was "avid" at programming I wouldn't waste my time on a program that will be used once and probably won't make jack shiz for money out of it. If you can find someone to do it then that is awsome. But beware... It's gonna be hard
