12 cylinders. the block is shaped so the pistons are making a w shape instead of a v shape... um... yea that basically explains it

I am taking it that you have read the website I told you then?  But Brian is exactly right.
To really understand something you must blow it up, and  fully examine the tiny particles while they are still on fire.

You could get away with making it a SOHC, but it would take a lot more design than a DOHC would.

i thought a W engine is two blocks vertically opposed to create one, not shaped like a W. but maybe i'm wrong. i read about this buggati with a quad turbo W16 engine, it was two vertically opposed V8 blocks that were forged together to make one, just looked like one big V16. there was only one shot of the engine though so i couldnt really get a good look at it.

here is what the deck would look like on a W-8 well fairly close. Instead of placing the cylinders side by side they offset each one to save space.

A very impressive motor even in it's infancy.

This concept car broke the 24 Hour indurance record for the most distance covered in 24 hours: 4402.8 miles at an average speed of 183.45MPH breaking the Corvette ZR1's record by 7.5MPH.

here is a better pic from VW's site

Also here are the pistons, which I thought were an interesting design.

I wonder what the purpose of putting the piston tops at an angle.  very interesting.

It keeps the fluid level in a cylinder shape... That way you don't have this little amount of gasoline on this side of the cylinder.. make sense?

The purpose of an internal combustion engine is to burn the fuel and air.  I am pretty sure if you don't burn it, boom, sorry charlie.  next guess?

Think about it.... It will have an even amount of fluid in a cylinder shape... yea it explodes, but it has to be an even amount all around within the cylinder

but the problem with that is it will have a more sideways push on the piston than a flat one with a directly downward force.

I am willing to bet if they leved it out, it would probably work better, considering it would make a larger volume, and therefore more power.

DD look at the pic if the piston was flat they would have less of the force being used to turn the crank. Instead the pistons would be pushed into the cylinder wall. With the angled pistons the force of the combustion is pushing directly down on the piston turning the crank instead of causing more friction.

each bank uses a single cylinder head, therefore the pistons have to have a 15 degree bevel to keep the deck surface flat. otherwise you'd be dealing with a head that has a 15 degree angle down the middle, which would lie directly in some of the cylinders, so it would have to alternate back and forth, and be very expensive and hard to get them to seal... think about it...

if they were just flat you could get very little compression, as the squish would be normal on one side and huge on the other, it wouldn't work at all.

I don't agree with OL, but Petey helped me understand it a lot better last night.
