eagle or JE pistons???
« on: 01:05AM 05/23/2003 »
who likes what? personally i'm a JE guy we run em in our porsches with great success... altho in german cars u can't even touch a custom forged mahle, but nothing touches that level of $$$$ either.

i gotta pick up a set of high CR slugs for my 9a one of these days and i gotta decide if i really wanna go for it and grab teh JE's or not.

for a honda i say Endyn Rollerwaves all the way. to my knowledge eagles are unfinished pistons, so between those two i'd go with JE.

yeah, but who wants to go through the hassle of balancing your piston's when you could have picked up some JE's for around the same price and just dropped them straight in?

custom JE's are that much, the shelf JE's sold out of magazines and race shops are around 350-400. the difference is around the same price of getting a set of 4 piston's balanced and finished.

yeah its just hard to find off the shelf 11.5:1's lol most cars the highest they make is ~ 9.5 or 10:1 for off the shelf... ditto for really low CR pistons too..

i know a guy running 6.5:1 in his porsche  :P

I can get anywhere from 8.8:1 to 12.1:1 for the same price of $500 JE.

i can drop a set of brand new CTR (Civic Type-R, not Choose The Right) piston's from a B16B into my B16A and get 12.1:1 compression for $350. ahhh, i love Honda. now if i could only find a way to stroke my motor to a 1.8L without spending $2,600.

I bought a set of custom JE's with rings for 481 shipped. Not too bad if you ask me.

Now the only question is, why 12.1:1?  I don't think you would be able to afford the fuel for it if it was a daily driver.

fuel is gay? this aint a merlin 519 we're talkin about here its a f u c k i n 4 banger...

s h i t, you could put a couple extra fuel injectors sprayin into the exhaust for 24-7 flames and still have decent mileage...

i'm converting my vdub to carbs next, after i recover from that bill its gettin some pauter rods and some je's proally, i gotta do a leak down and see what kinda condition the bore and valves are in, i'd rather not sink 1200 into a valve job if not neccessary.

12:1 probably won't run on pump gas, not without a lot of timing retard and running it really rich, in which case you can make more power from slightly lower compression and more timing advance and leaner... more efficient... compression robs power.

i might do 12:1's because i don't daily drive my car (well sometimes) and i can just mix a bit of race fuel here and there, and it takes about 15 seconds to turn back my timing a bit. we'll see...

you should know what it's like to pay for things when you don't have money pete.  Paying $4+ dollars a gallon for 110 isn't exactly a viable price for a lot of us kids.  Hence the reason I wouldn't put 12.1:1 in my daily driven car.

in amercia, despite our struggle for the reign of the oil industry, we get some of the s h i t t i e s t gas in the world. europe, japan, etc... have 100+ octane at the pump. thats why the new ITR isn't being released for a while because of its 11.2:1 compression, honda didnt want to release it in america with that kind of compression when the best gas you can put in at an affordable price is 93 octane, it wont provide the kind of reliability, or performance needed for a car with that kind of set up. honda tuner magazine tested a JDM K20A ITR engine on 93 octane and it ran like total s h i t till they got some 100 in it.

so...if youre planning on running 12.1:1 compression, i'd have a whole s h i t load of 104 on hand. jensen oil on 47th and redwood sells quality 104-112 at the pump for like $3-$5 per gallon. they'll also fill you up with 104 if you can get over the huge hump in the back. also, mixing 93 with tolulene will give you 98 or 99 octane, but that is one of the worst mixtures you could put in your car. it will f u c k up your valve's quicker than rosanne barr eating at chuck-a-rama.

we buy 116 octane in 55 gallon drums  :P

12:1 might ok on pump with some timing retard, if not its easy enough to take some dome off them and lower the CR a little... kinda a pain in the a s s tho to rebalence em... but you can always reduce CR can't increase it very easily...

maybe 11.5:1's, i'll have to check all my sources and see what is available... its a fine line there between 11.5:1 and 12:1 its so close to knocking with the 11.5:1's that who knows lol its totally up to my particular engine basically if its going to or not... ferrari uses 11.4:1 as OEM on 360 modena, nice engine management tho dual bosch motronics...

btw i can run leaded in my car don't worry about that  :P

lol yeah mixing fuels to get an octane is ghetto, i knew a guy who was a total dumb a s s who used to mix xylene paint thinner, which is like 120 octane and pump to come up with ~ 100 octane... lol i used to give him mad amounts of s h i t, who the hell dumps 15 grand in mods into a 30k m3 then cheaps out on the fuel?
