What to do with a POS 89 Accord
« on: 09:05AM 06/11/2004 »
I was just given an 89 Accord to do what I want with. I plan on swapping the engine and transmission I'm just not sure for which one. Want to make a killer sleeper. Any suggestions???

An engine swap is a given, and optional regearing of the transmission.

But what kind of trany does it have now? When you say you want to swap the transmission, do you just want to replace the old one, with another thats more a-tuned to race with? Or are you trying to go from and automatic to a manual, or vice-versa?

Want to switch from an auto to a manual. Totally set up for racing. I want as much whp as possible. The way I see it, it's a free car and I can put some money into it to make it fun to drive and able to go as fast as possible. I want to use it as a project car to really learn about tuning. I figure start cheap and move up.

I also want to spend less than $5,000. I can do all of the work myself so that's just parts.

Well, I'm definatly no car expert compared to most of the guys on here,

however, I'm thinking that if you're going try and switch out an auto to a manual, you may as well sell the car and buy a different one with a manual trasmission.

It would be ALOT of work.

It's up to you I guess. If you want to learn. Start under the hood. Don't worry about the drivetrain right away.

And if you have $5,000...Get a decent car and put a Drag, or Greddy Kit on it.

What would I recommend? What do you mean? Between the kits? Or what would I recommend car wise?

I know a way you can make a quick $50, sell the car to me. I had a 1983 Accord that I planned to swap a 350 V8 in the rear and make it RWD, but it was too much $$$. An '89 Accord would have more Honda related possibilities. Plus I need a project car that I can practice with fiberglass on...you know, wide fenders, a custom bodykit, roof scoop, hood scoop, the works! So, just send me a message, and I will send the $$$ quickly! :D

I meant what kind of car to get. I have a 98 nissan Sentra and there's nothing on the market for it except an intake and an exhaust. Other than that, it's to swap in a different engine for a whopping 30 hp. All for $4500. That's why I was thinking to find a honda and do something with it. If you think a different car, besides my sentra or the honda, would be easy to make into a drag car then that's what I'm looking for. More than anything I need a hobby. I can get parts for relatively cheap from a couple of places because I make carbon fiber and fiberglass body kits so I can trade CF and paint work for parts.

It depends how much money you have.

The type of car to get, especially if your going to use it as a hobby car, varies greatly from person to person.

I don't have anything to recommend car-wise, as all cars have their strength and weaknesses.

Take the money drop an SR20DET in your sentra, and use the Accord as your commuter car. ;)

I would have to say that putting the money into the accord is probably not that wise of a choice, for drag atleast, you could make it into a fairly fast car, but switching to a 5 speed is going to me more trouble/?/headache than it's worth.

That's just my opinion though...

i'd keep the accord and do a H22A swap. i raced an early 90's accord with H22 in my old Si, he spanked me three ways from thursday.

I think i'm going to just do a swap in my sentra. I'll sell the accord and use the money for the swap.

the best thing you could do is cut the top off of it and make it a rally car, and after that make it radio controlled! SWEET!!!

i have the motor and the pistons i will sell them to you for $750
Japan was awesome. But now it's time to try out Virgina.
