Old Honda engines VS new ones...
« on: 09:50PM 05/24/2004 »
So I am lookin at a new cra to get and am lookin at a civic hx (want an economy car that'll last) and was just wondering if the new hondas were as reliable as the old ones (easily get 300k w/o any major probs)? The one I am looking at has he I-Vtec (believe that's what it is), can anyone help me out? Anyone have any knowledge in this subject? Thanks kids, lata.

i've owned 3 civics, two 97 SOHC non-VTEC's, and one 99 w/B16A. the current one i'm driving has almost 120,000 miles on it, hasn't had an oil change in nearly 15,000 miles, and it still runs perfectly, no stalling, no seizing. starts up perfectly every time, and never goes above running temp.

the HX has VTEC-E, which is basically VTEC tuned to provide better fuel economy instead of performance. i-VTEC never came around till 2002.

(BTW, i'm not suggesting you should wait 15,000 miles to change your oil. i'm just using my laziness to show how reliable a honda can be.)

My gf's 04 Civic EX says every 10K in the manual.  I don't know if 2 or 3 years is enough to tell if an engine is reliable as an ancient one.  They probably have 90K on them tops.
To really understand something you must blow it up, and  fully examine the tiny particles while they are still on fire.

Hmmm, thanks for the info. What engine comes in the new HX models? The I-VTEC or the VTEC-E? What's the dif between the 2 engines?

its just VTEC-E.. iVTEC changes the intake camshaft timing during VTEC engagement through the cam sprocket, so only DOHC engines have iVTEC.

I think it would be safe to say any d,b,k,f series honda motor will run for ever. I punish my b18 in my integra and it looks at me as if to say "Is that all you got"

Hey guys! plz let me know Honda VTEC engines should be tuned while they are cold or hot? I mean perfect valve clearance etc.

*By S2K1*Maybe we should just go check out your website and see for ourselves what you recommend?!? Hmm...good idea. Nice try. Links removed.
