Drag or GReddy turbo - 2000 Civic EX
« on: 09:42AM 05/04/2004 »
Found out I get hook-ups on Drag kits too.  :woot:

Here's what I'm looking at.

Full Drag kit, including BOV and Intercooler for $2,650.00

or

GReddy kit, no BOV or Intercooler for $1,820.00

I can get the GReddy BOV for $160 and the intercooler for $594 or $750 for the larger one.  So, with the BOV and IC I'll basically be right at the $2,650.00 that the Drag would have cost.

So, which kit is better?  Which kit is more reliable?

I would still go for Greddy. Fitment and emissions will be a deciding factor. You also have to consider Tuning. Greddy's kit comes with e-manage that is already programmed for your specific vehicle.

I too am going to reccommend the GReddy kit.
Fitment on the GReddy kits is Second to None. The other aftermarket turbo kits usually take some modification to fit properly. The GReddy kit is also going to come with a "pre-tuned" E-Manage, but no one can ever "pre-tune" perfectly for our evelation and other factors that play a part in tuning. If you do decide to go with the GReddy kit, make sure that you get an O2 Sensor bung put in it so that when and if you decide to go to Modern for tuning, then they can easily put in their wideband O2 sensor.

Mind elaborating?  Is that something I'd have to order with the kit?  If so, what's the ballpark cost?

Will you IM me on potential tuning cost also?  :P

O2 sensor bung is where the O2 sensor is plugged in on the exhaust piping. modern uses a wideband O2 while tuning because it gives a very accurate reading of your A/F ratio compared to the stock O2. it basically says "your A/F ratio is 15.2" instead of "your A/F ratio is rich."

pretty much any exhaust shop can weld an O2 bung on there for you.

oh and i also vote for GReddy, because of fitment. :D

i know not anyone will agree with me(we'll at least on this site anyway)...but belive it or not i have had both kits on the same car with the same sohc motor you have i had the full drag 3 and the greddy with intercooler. i got the greddy kit first .. i put it on with no problems what so ever.  i got good gas milage  and great reliability(at 7 psi of boost) which is the max a single cam can handle safely. i had the kit for about 6 months ran great, no problems....then came the track.  the best i could pull even on drag slicks was a 14.5....i lost races ... that kit had to go....gone

next came drag 3 (i still have this) great fitment, no problems( had for like a year so far) i boost 7 psi sam as i did in the greddy kit.  the turbo is like double the size of a greddy.   bottem line ....i LOVE greddy products...but when it came to 1/4 mile drag wins ....13.7 same amount of boost.....hmmm..weird..

well i know i am going to get all these people responding to me talkin crap, that dont own a single cam, or a honda, or even ever had either of these turbo kits or even a turbo for that matter...greddys ads i must admit are pretty..but if you go down to rmr and see a honda civic/integra running 11's like last season tell them to pop their hoods and you'll see the t3/t4 not a half size greddy/mitsubishi... when i lived in cali people did not even ask what kit to buy...it always was and will be DRAG....so everyone talk all you want but unless you have owned 1 of these kits...i wont read it...

hope to see some of you at rmr tomorrow...late

i've owned a GReddy kit ;D

you can boost much more than 7psi on a SOHC with an intercooler. you see, there's this thing called tuning, where you adjust the timing, air, fuel, etc... to create more power. i've seen stock SOHC's running 10+psi and pushing out nearly 200whp on GReddy kits. nobody's making GReddy out to be the best kit in the world, there are definitly better kits out there. but for the price, it's a great starter kit and can be very easily upgraded.

go to www.turbod16.com nearly 80% of the users on that site are using the GReddy kit, or GReddy turbos. not because theyre the best around, its because they're relatively inexpensive, and are very easy to tune/upgrade.

See, I thought I had heard that the Drag kit provided more HP.  That's what initiated me asking.

well i know i am going to get all these people responding to me talkin crap

:bobby:  No.  I'm not too keen on the drama so everyone is pretty cool on the site.

i do agree with you btown but i was talking with no tuning/ seeing as how you are starting off....i would absolutly love the greddy kit if it had a bigger turbo...i honestly don't know how much power the greddy turbo can push..but i know my drag can do 400 wheels...not that i will ever get that high but still...either way it was just my point of view..dont mean to be a a s s
