Loosening Clutch
« on: 09:33PM 04/20/2004 »
I'm not the greatest at driving tight clutches. How would I go about loosening a clutch so that it engages over a larger area?

Right now. If the car was stopped; If you lift the clutch up just an inch, the clutch will make full contact and the car will get right up and go. I need it to do that over a few inches so it'll be a little easier the engage the clutch.

I know my new clutch was like that for a while.  Then I dunno if thru wear, or if it loosened or what now it's not as touchy/tight.

I already loosened the cable. All that did was move the points of engagment up. It didn't make it a greater distance between points.

Hehe, I'm kidding. But I'll come up with something original.

are you trying to say you want the engagement point to be extended? once the clutch is engaged, it's engaged, you cant extend that in any way other than feathering the clutch. sounds like you just need to learn how to drive a little better. what i would do is loosen the clutch cable so you have more room to work with feathering it and just learn how to drive.

I'm slowly getting used to it. I've just never driven a really tight clutch. And it is not just tight. It's too tight IMHO. The only problem is that it is difficult to get a slow start. I can easily get the car moving from a stopped position... I'd just like it if the car didn't jump up to 20mph right off the bat.

A good thing in some cases. Not as much so for a commuter car though.

yeah, just learn how to drive it, it takes a while to get used to clutches.

Depending on the clutch type it may just have a harsh engagement like that.   Old worn out clutches usually have a smoother engagement than even OEM replacement new clutches.

You can change the engagement point of the clutch by adjusting it. In the end you're limited by giving xx amount of peddle throw and getting xx amount of movement at the clutch release fork, whether be hydrolic or cable driven or whatever, so I don't think there's a whole lot you can do to adjust the pedal feel.
