Topic: custom parts!!

I have a friend that needs some custom parts for his car.
header-back duel exhast
mandrel bent tubing
glass packs exiting behind axel.

it's a 72 valiant, He doesn't want just any shop doing it.  He doesn't want to go to the nearest muffler shop, he wants good quality and performance.

im pretty sure that anywhere he goes will be able to do that. if he wants it to be any better than what any muffler shop can do, then he'll have to hire somebody to perform some R&D and tune it to perfection.

that being said, Ray's Muffler in bountiful does great work, along with Bountiful Muffler and Brake which is just down the street.  there are no mandrel benders in utah, so he'll have to get the mandrel bends welded on.  they can also send the tubing out  to a mandrel bender, but that costs $$$.

I've heard Rex mufflers in Ogden is the place to go...

I don't recommend Ray's... They did some very very shoddy work on my brother's car... His WELDED hangers broke off, at the welds!! causing his muffler to hang down bending the piping...  If you can't make your welds the strong point, you shouldn't be welding...

However, in the past I've heard good things about them, I just don't think I'll trust them after that episode.  Takes many good experiences to build a relationship, only one to ruin it.

I can weld, but no access to a pipe bender =`( If your buddy wants to do custom headers than i'd be careful... That's starting to mess with mathmetical mechanics right there and I am not so sure any shops actually do what Manufacturers have to do?

My personal recommendation...

Midas at Riverdale and washington.

Their "custom" exhaust guy is excellent, and they have great pricing, or have in the past.

They did the exhaust on all of my vehicles, and one of my brother's.

They did a true dual with a rollpan exit on my S10, a true dual on my brother's 1500, and they did a custom catback on my car, as well as a custom catback on my old Prizm when everyone else told me it couldn't be done

My main selling point is how well they did my truck's exhaust routing to get around my leafs and exit through the bumper/rollpan impressive.

BTW they are of course a crush bending exhaust shop, but in my opinion going 1/4" bigger than you would with a mandral bent setup should fix the issue of crush vs mandral. (my opinion)

Also I have heard good things about Rays, which is why my brother gave them a shot, his could be the exception.

My step-dad owns Dr. Gas Exhaust Components in Sandy. They are responsible for about 80% of all the NASCAR exhaust systems. He owns a mandrel bender and soon will own a DynoJet Chassis Dyno. He will do custom work, but I will tell you up front, he is slow, and it'll cost $$$. Mandrel Benders are expensive!

how long has he had the mandrel bender for? when i was trying to find one in utah two years ago everywhere i went said there were no mandrel benders in utah.

Would have been in the last year or so.  He's always had bends on hand if you wanted to piece something together.

He's had the bender for several years. It is very low key on who has a mandrel bender, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is 2-3 others.

Ok, I just talked to my step-dad, he has had his mandrel bender for 2 years, and says it is the only one in town.
